America: Variations of Optimism (via frank-c)
aka Four Freak Flags Flying in Denver
Artist Frank Chimero submitted the above four works of fanciful art (on embellished giclée and cut paper) to the moveon.org-sponsored liberal art fest Manifest Hope, appearing in Denver during the Dem convention.
He states, “Each piece focuses on one of the key ideals necessary for a bright future in America: Unity, Hope, Change and Progress.”
I’m assuming that Frank’s really just a right-wing plant (or Baba Booey, if he’s still around) looking to create a scandal in the art contest, ‘cause there’s no way any oh-so-earnest liberal could possibly think it’s a good idea to remake the American flag to suit their own Democratic purposes.
(Of course that’s what they want to do, but ssshhhh, don’t say it out loud. Remember the flack they already took for trying to co-op the presidential seal for Obama’s campaign.)
Let’s take a closer look at these flags. (The artist recommends that you view them at full size.)
Unity: The stars have been appropriately clustered into the Obama “O.” A ladder has been thrust through a hole ripped in the fabric of the flag. Perhaps put up by a coyote trying to hide a few illegal aliens amongst the cluster? Si se puede.
Hope: A trippy star’s flying off the colors into a loony-catcher net. That’s got to be Vermont. They hope to leave. We hope to let them.
Change: Yes, change is represented by turning the flag on its head. Red is blue, stars are stripes. There’s no real reason or benefit achieved by the change. But, by golly, it’s change alright. Change for change’s sake. Oh, yes we can.
Progress: Ah, this represents true progress. Just cut the sacred all to shreds. It’s so much prettier that way. People that aren’t open to this kind of progress are just sticks in the mud. Get with it! Recreate ‘68!
My favorite actually is the Progressive Old Glory. Note all the stars gone AWOL. Looks like if/when that flag gets adopted, a whole bunch of stars will have come to their senses, united and gotten the heck out of Denver. Now that’s change we can hope for.
